School-readiness guide
Turn packing a backpack into a repeatable visual routine.
A backpack checklist works best when it mirrors the actual school day. The goal is not a longer list; it is a reliable sequence children can scan before leaving.
A simple way to set it up
- List only items that are truly part of the child’s school routine.
- Separate daily items from occasional items such as library books.
- Place the checklist near the packing area or exit.
- Use the same order each day when possible.
- Finish with one clear “all done / backpack ready” check.
What tends to make the routine harder
- Mixing daily and occasional items into one permanent list
- Using adult-only labels a preschooler cannot connect to an object
- Packing in several rooms with no fixed check point
- Adding too many “just in case” items
